Floyd Mayweather Jr. was sentenced to six months in jail, three of them suspended, after taking plea deal in Las Vegas to avoid trial on allegations that he battered his ex-girlfriend.
Mayweather pleaded guilty to a count of battery-domestic violence and no contest to two counts of harassment. A felony charge was dropped.
Judge Melissa Saragosa also ordered the undefeated boxer to complete 100 hours of community service and pay a $2,500 US fine.
The 34-year-old Mayweather was charged in connection with a September 2010 argument involving his Josie Harris, who is his ex-girlfriend and the mother of two of his children.
Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich told the judge Mayweather has been in trouble before and hasn't been punished.
Lawyer Karen Winckler had argued the public would benefit more if Mayweather performs 100 hours of community service with children.
She says she's considering an appeal.
Mayweather was told to report to jail Jan. 6.
Mayweather defeated Victor Ortiz to run his record to 42-0 with 26 knockouts.
The sentence will once again push back any chances of an immediate fight with Manny Pacquiao, which would be the most lucrative in boxing history, but Mayweather could have faced 34 years in state prison if he was convicted of all charges.
