"Harold Klemp is the spiritual leader of Eckankar today. He was raised on a Wisconsin farm and attended divinity school. In the 1960s, he found the teachings of Eckankar. In 1981, after years of spiritual training, Harold Klemp became the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master.

The Mahanta is the inner, or spiritual, form of the Living ECK Master. The Mahanta gives inner guidance through dreams, Soul Travel, and the Spiritual Exercises of ECK.

Where did the ECK teachings come from?

A Personal Experience with Gopal Das
Here's a true story about someone who met Gopal Das years before the modern-day founding of Eckankar:

Secret Teachings

An ECKist in Africa was an electrical engineer. He had gone to someone's home to do some electrical work. He was working with the son of a very old man who lived there. The son was a retired school principal, up in years too.

The ECKist engineer was telling the son about ECK. As they were talking, the very old man came into the room.

"What are you doing?" he said to the engineer. "What are you doing, telling the secrets of ECK to this child?" This child was the old man's son, the retired principal.

The ECKist said, "They're not secret anymore. In 1965, Paul Twitchell brought them out to the public."

The old man thought awhile. "I first heard about Eckankar in 1914," he said. He described the ECK Master who had spoken to him about Eckankar. "I see Eckankar has finally made it out to this plane," he added.

All these years the old man in Africa had been going to the Temples of Golden Wisdom in the inner worlds to get his teaching about Eckankar from an ECK Master with long, blond hair.

The ECKist said, "I'll bring you a picture. I think I know the ECK Master you met."

So the ECKist went home, found his picture of Gopal Das, and brought it to the old man. Gopal Das once served as the Mahanta, the Living ECK Master but now works in the inner worlds.

The old man looked at the picture. "Yes, that is the man who has taught me since I was young, since I first heard of Eckankar in 1914," he said.

People today sometimes wonder about ECK. They hear it was founded in 1965 and believe it's something modern.

The teachings of ECK have been around for a long time, as this old African man knows.
