Van Persie - Why I’m flying in new role
It took him a little time but Robin Van Persie is now flying in his new role as Arsenal’s main striker.
The Dutchman admitted to finding the central position a ‘lonely’ one in the opening weeks of the campaign and failed to find the net in his first five appearances.
But Van Persie broke his duck with a supreme finish at Manchester City in September and has not looked back. His North London derby brace on Saturday took his tally to eight in the last nine games.
So why has it suddenly gone so right for Robin? He explained why in an exclusive interview with the Official Matchday Programme.
“In the last four or five weeks I’ve felt much better,” he said.
“I’ve had to get used to the new role because I previously played as a second striker and now I’m operating as a main striker, so I needed to find my way in.
“To my mind, earlier in the season I lost too much energy working defensively and needed to find the right balance. It’s really important for the team that I have enough energy to score goals and make assists, as well as helping out in other ways.
“I feel that in the last few weeks I’ve found that mix, of having the energy to do my offensive work and contribute defensively.
“It was hard in the first few weeks to really find my way – the second striker and striker are very close to each other on the pitch but at the same time there’s such a difference, a massive difference, between the two roles.
“ I like it because it’s a new challenge for me and if you look at the results and the personal stats of almost every player, everyone has improved with the new system.”

Now e dey go ask for right hand drive too? ... |
I don't get people who just choose to use left hand drive cars in the the UK. It's his choice but he certainly can afford a right hand drive car. |

Kroenke increases Arsenal stake
Stan Kroenke has increased his holding in Arsenal to 29.6 per cent after purchasing a further 427 shares.
..The Denver-based sports magnate is now the largest individual shareholder in the Gunners, with a stake of some 29.6% after acquiring 427 shares at £8,500 each from the estate of the British industrialist Ernest Harrison.
Should Kroenke, or indeed anyone else such as second-largest shareholder Alisher Usmanov, reach a figure of 29.9%, they would, under the City's financial regulations, be obliged to launch a formal takeover bid.
However, when the matter of his intentions for the Premier League club were directly questioned during the recent annual general meeting at Emirates Stadium, the American - nicknamed 'Silent Stan' - chose not to take the opportunity to address the gathered shareholders, with chairman Peter Hill-Wood intervening.
Any public statements against future bid intentions must be unambiguous, otherwise the individual or group would, under the Takeover Panel's rule 2.8, be prevented from making a formal move for six months.
While Hill-Wood insisted major changes behind the scenes were not on the agenda, the Arsenal chairman has also suggested he was "very relaxed" about a proposed takeover by the American. The Arsenal Supporters Trust, meanwhile, believe the latest moves do not mean a takeover from Kroenke is imminent.

Kroenke increases stake in soccer club Arsenal
LONDON (AP)—American businessman Stan Kroenke has moved within a fraction of launching a mandatory takeover bid for Premier League soccer club Arsenal.
Kroenke, the London club’s largest shareholder, increased his stake to 29.6 percent, just short of the 29.9 needed to force a takeover. He previously held a 28.9 percent stake.
The Denver-based businessman’s latest acquisition of 427 shares cost him about $5.9 million.
During Arsenal’s annual general meeting late last month, Kroenke avoided questions about his takeover plans, instead allowing chairman Peter Hill-Wood to answer for him.
In Britain, individuals or groups wishing to make a takeover bid must be unambiguous with their intentions or face a six-month penalty before being able to launch the bid.
The Arsenal Supporters Trust, a fans’ group that has been seeking a meeting with Kroenke, released a statement Tuesday stressing that it opposes a full takeover of the club.
“While the AST welcome Stan Kroenke’s involvement, we agree with the sentiment of Peter Hill-Wood’s statement at the most recent AGM that there is no need for any shareholder to launch a takeover of the club,” the AST said. “The AST believes in plurality of ownership.”
Americans own four other Premier League clubs—Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Sunderland.
If Arsenal is taken over by Kroenke—or even Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov, the club’s second-largest shareholder—it would become the 11th club in the 20-team Premier League under foreign ownership.
The latest club to fall under foreign ownership was Birmingham, which was bought by Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung last month. Other clubs are Chelsea, Manchester City, Fulham, West Ham and Portsmouth.
Kroenke also owns the Colorado Rapids, the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche.
