OKOMFO ANOKYE and MOHAMMED and JESUS - Are these three godmen equal?
I have heard say that Mohammed is to Islam what Jesus is to Christianity. From where I sit, I know that Okomfo Anokye is in the same league as these middle east godmen. Yes I know.
Okomfo Anokye had dealings with the great creator, Onyankopon, long before religious influences that originated in the Middle East were brought to this part of the world by marauding tribes from Europe and the Middle East. Before the Christian slave trading empires arrived on our shores, Okomfo Anokye had demonstrated the power of Onyankopon by commanding a golden stool from heaven. He had also performed miracles worthy of any godman; be they Islamic or Christian.
So why is this great African godson not mentioned in our history?
Why has he been excluded from our religious narrative?
Why are our school curricula empty on this subject?
In a democratic nation where the constitution enshrines religious freedom where are our politicians on the issue?
Where is President Mills?
Where is his minister of education?
Where are all the politicians?
Where is the NDC?
Where is the NPP?
Where is the CPP?
Why are we teaching Jesus and not teaching Okomfo Anokye?
Meanwhile most of Okomfo Anokye's feats and achievements are present in Ghana for all to see, touch and feel.
I recall in my school days (Kwame Nkrumah's CPP days) when we will listen with rapt attention to the Okomfo Anokye story. Such classes usually concluded with a dramatisation of the great Okomfo's unique feats and achievements. Why then was the Okomfo Anokye story removed from school curricula?
We need to reinstate Okomfo Anokye in school curricula from Class One to University. We must teach Okomfo Anokye and NOW!
Can we attribute the silence on Okomfo Anokye to Kofi Ellison's quote ... "Upon reflection, it is sad that of late some of our misguided Ghanaian Christian Pastors and other similarly misguided people, have taken to deriding the achievements and personality of Okomfo Anokye as idolatry and anathema. It is this sad reality due to the colonization of the African mind that concerns me. In every corner of the globe, people respect their tradition and culture in spite of so-called “modernity”. Other cultures still regard similar feats as the gospel truth. To wit: Moses received Ten Commandments from Heaven and resulted in Judaism; a virgin birth of Jesus resulted in Christianity; Mohamed's vision led to Islam; think about Buddha and Buddhism; or Hinduism and its prophets; in the United States, Joseph Smith had a 'vision' in the 1820's in New York and that led to the birth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or Mormons. Examples are legion. It is only Africans who tend to undermine and disrespect their own culture while hanging on to the “truths” of received ideas from foreign lands."
Okomfo Anokye presents us with a unique capacity to produce a counter-narrative to our colonial state-of-mind and to give a boost to African cultures. Let us take it. It may yet save us from ourselves.
